Disability and inclusive development workshop organized

National Federation of the Disabled Nepal(NFDN), National Planning Commission(NPC), Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare(MOWCSW) and Independent Living Centre(IL Centre Kathmandu) jointly convened an interaction on "Disability and Inclusive Development" in the partnership of UNDP-Nepal on 28th September, 2015.

Representatives from different governmental agencies (ministries), development partners/INGOs/NGOs, and Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) were participated in the program at Himalaya Hotel Lalitpur, Nepal. Three different presentations were presented in the workshop for the further discussion. The event was chaired by Mr. Dhan BDR Tamang, Secretary of NOWCSW and moderated by Tika Dahal, General Secretary of NFDN.

Initially, three different presentations were presented in the program. Mrs. Humkala Pandey, under-secretary of MOWCSW presented the paper on Disability related constitutional, legal and program based provisions and its execution status in Nepal. She, in her same presentation, further updates on some legal frameworks and programs that are planned for this fiscal year and somewhere in pipeline to be adopted.

Another presenter Mr. Saurab Sharma, member of working committee-Association of International NGOS in Nepal (AIN) put forward his ideas through the presentation: “Roles of INGOS in disability rights promotion and future vision” whereas admin manager of NFDN, Mr. Manish Prasain discussed about the disability inclusion and investment welcoming all the stakeholders in joining the floor for further broader discussion with diverse opinions on the same topic.

In the second part of event, Representatives from different DPOs and NGOs/INGOs came up with some specific solutions/suggestions for different concerned stakeholders. Moreover, they also extended the
good practices as well as problems of their organizations while working on disability relating with developmental activities. Some specific issues of disability and inclusive development raised in the
event are listed below:

•  Availability of proven  statistics/ data base: documentation and
inclusive information management system.
•  Inclusive disaster risk management and post-disaster activities.
•  Inclusive legal and policy frameworks and their effective/result
oriented execution.
•  Investment in the disability community and their contribution on the
development of society and nation.
•  Prioritization of left out groups within the disability community.
•  Issue of inclusive education, health-care, livelyhood and inclusive
working environment.
•  Strong coordination and cooperation among concerned stakeholders.
•  Comprehensive monitoring mechanism and its effective execution.

Finally, Mr. Sankar Pathak, joint secretary of MOWCSW, Mrs. Bimala Rai/Paudel, and Mr. Dhan BDR Tamang, Secretary of MOWCSW addressed all the raised issues. Furthermore, they also expressed their commitments from their own organizations for further positive development. All of the participants urged to plan and carry out that kind of events even in future time for prolific discussion.
