Disability Rights Bill (2016) has been tabled in the Legislative Parliament

4th July 2016, Kathmandu

The disability rights bill 2072 has been tabled by Hon. C.P. Mainali, Minister, Ministry of Women Children and Social Welfare formally in the legislative parliament today.

Under the general duties and responsibilities of the state; the government has rewritten the Disabled Protection and Welfare Act 1982 in line with UNCRPD for its implementation in Nepal. The other key objective of this changes in disability-related law is to implement the provisions ensured for the rights of persons with disabilities in the recently promulgated new constitution of Nepal.

After completing all processes the government had registered the draft of this Act (bill) in the secretariat of legislative parliament on December 2015.

This Act was made after a series of consultations and discussion with National Federation of the Disabled Nepal (NFDN), its member organizations, disability rights activists and all relevant stakeholders.

NFDN, along with the support and cooperation of its member organizations, civil society, disability rights activists has been leading the advocacy and lobby for last more than 5 years to bring this Act and all stakeholders and persons with disabilities have now demanded this act to be passed from the legislative parliament as soon as possible.
